An AI Wrote This Blog

You read that correctly. This blog below was generated by an AI. All I had to do was ask ChatGPT, a Natural Language Generation AI program currently making waves on the internet (for a variety of reasons) the following question: “Write me a 500-word blog about how AI like ChatGPT-3 can influence digital marketing in the future”. This is what it wrote:

CHATGPT

Another advantage of AI in digital marketing is the ability to automate certain tasks. For example, AI can be used to analyse large amounts of data and identify patterns in customer behaviour. This can be used to inform targeted marketing campaigns, such as email or social media promotions, that are more likely to be successful. Additionally, AI can be used to automate the process of creating and distributing content, such as blog posts or videos, which can save businesses time and money.

AI can also be used to analyse customer sentiment and feedback, which can help businesses to improve their products and services. By monitoring social media and other online platforms, AI can identify areas where customers are expressing dissatisfaction or have suggestions for improvement. This can help businesses to address these issues and make changes that will ultimately lead to happier customers and increased sales.

One of the most exciting areas of AI in digital marketing is voice-enabled search and voice-enabled ads. As more and more people use voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home to search the web, businesses need to adapt their digital marketing strategies to take advantage of this trend. For example, businesses can create voice-enabled ads that allow customers to interact with their products and services using only their voice.

Another interesting area of AI in digital marketing is the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to create immersive experiences for customers. These technologies can be used to create virtual showrooms, virtual tours, and other interactive experiences that allow customers to explore products and services in a more engaging way.

In conclusion, AI is changing the way businesses interact with customers and promote their products and services. From personalisation to automation, AI offers a wide range of benefits that can help businesses to improve their digital marketing efforts. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative uses of AI in digital marketing in the future. Businesses that are willing to embrace AI and explore new technologies will be better positioned to succeed in the digital age.”

It’s pretty amazing. Yes, we’re living in a time where the boundaries of what humans and computers can do are rapidly blurring. To be fair, we’ve had Alexa and other voice-activated devices answering our spoken questions, performing tasks on the computer or phone, or even controlling our homes at our command for quite some time now, but this is different.

ChatGPT passes MBA exam

As we’ve seen previously, the repercussions of AI being able to generate content such as that article above don’t end at just putting bloggers out of jobs, it’s far wider. On January 25th 2023, professors at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School reported uploading their Operations Management Course questions, then grading ChatGPT-3’s answers and it scored between a B and B-, passing the final exam.

The program was able to understand subtle hints and nuances of the questions and gave detailed answers that satisfied the requirements of the course work. It was able to replicate the knowledge base of general and specialised workers to an impressive degree. However, they found some surprising limitations where the AI made mistakes in simple calculations at the 6th grade level maths and sometimes gave very confident (but flat out wrong) answers. The accuracy of ChatGPT’s answers in normal questions are also highly variable, so we cannot take it as fact just yet.

Nonetheless, this sparked discussions about the use of AI by students around the world to cheat. And sure enough, since its availability for public use, there have been countless cases and articles of students purveying the ‘help’ of this program to do their homework. As I write this, educators are asking the question: will this change how we learn?

Perhaps it’s leading towards an evolution in the way we are taught to learn. On the one hand, AI could be a powerful tool that answers our questions and supports our inquiring minds. However, AI can only recombine and give us answers with data it has learnt. It does not have the capacity to create original thoughts or ideas. Humans have to be the ones to lead the way in creating new ideas. But is creativity truly ours alone?

Creativity or collating?

As it stands now, ChatGPT functions as an impressive text-only version of virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s voice-activated search with one key difference: it is able to recombine data sets from its extensive learning pool and present coherent answers for most novel questions, simulating real creativity. This allows it to come up with a bunch of cool new interactive options that are really fascinating. I asked it to create a poem about a butterfly and a teapot falling in love and it came up with this:

CHATGPT

A butterfly fluttered by the window,

Where a teapot sat, in its lonely glow.

The butterfly was taken by its form,

So delicate, so elegant, so warm.

It whispered to the teapot with a sigh,

“Oh, how I long to be by your side.”

The teapot blushed, its spout aglow,

For it too had fallen in love, you know.

They danced in the sunlight, so free,

The butterfly and the teapot, so happy to be.

Their love was a wonder to behold,

For it was a love that was pure and bold.

The butterfly whispered as it took flight,

“My love for you will shine as bright,

As the stars in the sky, forevermore,

Till the end of time, I will adore.”

And the teapot sat, in its lonely place,

Smiling, knowing, its love would never be replaced.

As the butterfly flew off into the blue,

The teapot was filled with love, as it brewed to be true.

The way ChatGPT ‘chats’ is by using algorithmic models to construct its sentences (or in this case, verses in a poem) word by word using its enormous training set learned from scraping data or texts written by humans on the internet and digitised books. While ChatGPT doesn’t really understand language the way we humans do, it’s able to take what humans have written in the past and mathematically recreate convincing works such as these.

What does this mean for human creativity if AI can now create poems in the blink of an eye? AI can also now create paintings, 3D animations and even videos as the AI floodgates seem to be close to bursting. In 2022, Stable diffusion and other text-to-visual programs have come a long way in being able to construct (or rather recombine) pictures from its extensive datasets into new products based on what the user types in the query field. Try it here! https://stablediffusionweb.com/#demo

However, especially when it comes to visuals, it’s much easier to peek behind the curtains and see how this Wizard of Oz really works. Yes, the magic of ‘AI’ isn’t really about an artificial intelligence that can learn and create like us, it’s more like a sophisticated automaton, programmed to make us think it can.

Getty images and also several artists in 2023 have filed lawsuits against Stability AI and several other image training AI companies for the unlawful use of their images. This was done without the consent or compensation to the artists or copyright holders of these images, they argue. The images they generated below clearly shows the algorithm trying to recreate the watermarks from images scraped from the net in bulk, thinking they are part of the scene. Could it mean that every image humans have ever uploaded was used?

Whatever the outcome of the lawsuit is, it is not likely that the AI phenomenon will be halted though. Eventually, it will be able to generate whole videos, memes, content we humans now consume daily. How will we react as a whole to a version of the internet with AI that is able to churn out new content at breakneck speed?

“As the world becomes increasingly digital, businesses are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help them stay ahead of the competition. One area where AI is having a particularly big impact is in digital marketing. From chatbots to personalised content, AI is changing the way companies interact with customers and promote their products and services.

One of the biggest advantages of AI in digital marketing is the ability to personalise communications with customers. For example, AI-powered chatbots can be used to provide personalised customer service, respond to frequently asked questions, and make product recommendations. This can help to build stronger relationships with customers and increase sales.
